Goodbye Lachy

It is with great sadness that we say farewell to one of our team.

Dr. Lachy has been with us since 2018 and has fitted in so well and been such an integral part of our (your!) team, that it really is like saying goodbye to a family member. Since joining us Lachy has built up a large client base of people and pets who love to see him, and with good reason. Dr. Lachy is by all accounts an excellent vet, a highly skilled surgeon, and has had some truly memorable saves on very complex cases. Above all Dr. Lachy is a kind and caring person who enriches the lives of those around him (whether they be on four legs or two!).

We will miss you Lach, and we all wish you the very best in the next chapter of your life.

In particular, Zoe loves working with her clients to create a trusting and comfortable grooming environment. She lives over North with 2 dogs of her own, Lolli the Cavalier and Winnie the Whippet, as well as 2 budgies, Rick and Morty.

ARE YOUR PETS UP TO DATE FOR THE SILLY SEASON?

With the silly season just about upon us, we wanted to remind our clients of the importance of having their pet’s vaccinations up to date.

It is often at this time of the year that we are travelling, and sometimes with very short notice.

If you are in the position of needing to board your pet in a kennel, it is requirement that their vaccinations are up to date.  If you take your pets with you, there is always a chance they can contract one of the diseases that vaccination protects against if they are unprotected.

Vaccination is one of the most powerful tools we have when it comes to keeping our pets healthy. They are also very  are safe and have minimal (if any) side effects.  We recommend you vaccinate your pets because, quite simply, they work.

Dogs

It is a kennel requirement that your dog be vaccinated with a C5 vaccination.  It is the minimum requirement for most boarding kennels. We strongly recommend a C5 vaccination for all dogs due to the frequency that we see dogs with parvovirus and canine cough in this area.  A C5 vaccination will cover your dog against all of the following diseases:

  • Distempter
  • Parvovirus
  • Adenovirus (Hepatitis)
  • Parainfluenza
  • Bordetella Bronchiseptica

Cats

We recommend an F4 vaccination be given for cats.  It protects against the major diseases we see in cats and they include:

  • Feline rhinotracheitis virus
  • Panlecopenia virus
  • Feline calicivurus
  • ChlamydiaXmas

WARNING!!! SNAKE SEASON IS HERE!!!

Each year as the weather starts to get warmer and warmer, snakes are out and the danger for your pets is very real. Over just the past few weeks, we have treated 7 dogs due to snake bite and we wanted to share with you some important information that could help save your pet.

The most common type of snake bites we see in our area are from the eastern brown snake and the king brown snake.
Really Good One

Symptoms

Several factors will determine what sort of reaction your pet has to a snake bite:

*The type of snake (some species of snake are more venomous that others)
*The amount of venom injected (depends on the size and maturity of the snake)
*The site of the snake bite (the most common area for dogs and cats to be bitten is on the limbs and around the head)

The most common signs of snake bit by a venomous brown snake are as follows:

*Shaking or twitching of the muscles
*Sudden weakness followed by collapse
*Seizures
*Dilated pupils not responsive to light
*Vomiting
*Blood in the urine
*In the later stages paralysis may occur – this usually starts from the ind legs.

IMPORTANT!!! Please note that while your pet may initially show symptoms of snake bite, it is quite common for them to to appear to make a quick recovery, leaving you wondering if perhaps they were not bitten after all, or if they even need any treatment.

Unfortunately this decision can ultimately mean the difference between life and death. If it imperative that you ignore this apparent period of calm if you suspect they were bitten as they will rapidly deteriorate if they in fact have been bitten.

Veterinary Treatment

*Examination – we will assess the clinical signs they are showing and determine the best treatment from there
*Diagnostic tests may be required to determine if your pet has actually been bitten
*Treatment usually consists of intravenous fluids and the administration of antivenom to neutralise the snake venom in the pet’s body. Some patients require multiple vials of antivenom.
*Ongoing veterinarian and nursing care in hospital will be required until the pet has recovered sufficiently to go home.

COVID-19 – We are open and here to help.

We are COVID-19 Safe

Firstly, we would like to reassure all of our clients that we are still here to help during this difficult time, and we will work with you to ensure we can continue to attend to your pet’s needs, whilst doing our part to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

We have put the following steps in place at our clinic for your health and ours:

  • If you have been overseas within the last 14 days, you’re experiencing symptoms and need to self-isolate, please phone us for advice and we can make a plan.
  • Whilst we are still more than happy to see you in person, we are also able to provide telephone, e-mail and photo consultations if you prefer.
  • Wherever possible, we ask that you attend any appointments yourself to keep numbers to a minimum.
  • To comply with social distancing, we request a maximum of two clients inside at any one time.  If we look full just give us a wave and we’ll come out to see you.
  • Please feel free to give us a phone call from the car park if you would prefer to wait in  your vehicle until you’re able to be seen.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support.
